UNMIS via UNV

The United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) is a peacekeeping mission of the United Nations and is managed by the UN Department of Peacekeeping Operations.

Through the adoption of Resolution 1590, on 24 March 2005, the UN Security Council has mandated UNMIS with the task of supporting the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, which was signed by the Government of Sudan and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement/Army in Nairobi on 9 January 2005.

In addition, UNMIS has a mandate from the Security Council to provide support to the African Union Mission in Sudan (AMIS) which is operating in Darfur.

The UNV is one of the gates to working and volunteering in UNMIS under its structure. The UNV Support Unit was set up in mid-February 2005 - just two weeks before the arrival of the first group of UN Volunteers - to ensure that all UN Volunteers assigned to the Mission had full administrative and substantive support. Apart from the UNV Program with UNMIS, there is also a regular UNV program which has operated in Sudan for many years and is associated with UNDP and other UN agencies. As a volunteer, you will be part of the UNV program with UMMIS. There will be approximately 150 UN Volunteers in this program working in different areas such as Human Rights, Civil Affairs, Protection/Child Protection, Public Information, Medical Support and many others, like GIS unit.
