World AIDS Day 2005

World AIDS Day is commemorated around the globe on 1 December. It celebrates progress made in the battle against the epidemic and brings into focus remaining challenges.

World AIDS Day 2005, themed Stop AIDS. Keep the promise. will focus on keeping commitments to stop AIDS at all levels: personal, community, organizational, governmental.

It supports the World AIDS Campaign advocacy efforts for the fulfilment of the UN Declaration of Commitment on HIV/AIDS and subsequent policy commitments on AIDS.

On the occasion of World AIDS Day, UNAIDS and WHO launched the AIDS epidemic update 2005 on 21 November. With maps and regional summaries, the 2005 edition of the annual report provides the most recent estimates of the epidemic s scope and human toll, explores new trends in the epidemic s evolution, and features a special section on women and AIDS.

The UNAIDS Secretariat is also helping to organize World AIDS Day events in both New York City and Geneva under the World AIDS Campaign theme of Stop AIDS. Keep the Promise.
